Stuttering Awareness Day
The Newfoundland Labrador Stuttering Association (NLSA) petitioned city officials in Newfoundland/Labrador to officially recognize International Stuttering Awareness Day (ISAD) on September 22.
As a way to support and promote ISAD and to build awareness and understanding about stuttering, The NLSA submitted proclamation requests to city councils and town councils requesting that they proclaim Tuesday October 22 as Stuttering Awareness Day. NLSA members Chair Greg O'Grady and board member Allison O'Brien were present during the official proclomation.
Also, Newfoundland Labrador government House was lit in green to acknowledge the day. Judy M. Foote, the Lieutenant Governor, stated in a Facebook post: "Government House is glowing green in recognition of International Stuttering Awareness Day supported by, among others, the Canadian Stuttering Association & the International Fluency Association. The theme for 2019 is “Growth Through Speaking”. Stuttering affects millions of people worldwide with some of the casual factors leading to stuttering remaining a mystery because of the complexities involved in relation to neurology, genetics & environmental considerations. According to Canadian Stuttering Association, high expectations, frustration, listener reaction, and anxiety can make stuttering worse in certain situations[...]"

The NLSA is pleased to inform that the following cities and towns proclaimed Tuesday October 22 as Stuttering Awareness Day: City of St. John’s, City of Mount Pearl, City of Corner Brook, Town of Carbonear, Town of Conception Bay South (CBS) and Town of Paradise. Wearing of a teal coloured ribbon on this Day symbolizes ISAD.
Tuesday October 22, International Stuttering Awareness Day (ISAD), is a specially designated day to advocate and support people who stutter and to;- create public awareness and to learn from each other
- to work together to share, give support, and educate one another and the general public on the impact that stuttering has on individuals’ lives
- to support stuttering research
- support Speech-Language Pathologists clinical treatment work.
