The McGuire Programme, a stuttering treatment program for adults who stutter, is being offered in Canada for the first time. Created by David MacGuire twenty years ago, it is popular in Europe, and most recently the British singer Gareth Gates praised the course for helping alleviate his stuttering. The first Canadian course will take place in Toronto from September 23-26, 2015.
The program is a very intense four day course, and it is recommended that participants stay at the host hotel in Toronto for the duration. It involves breathing exercises and other techniques, both psychological and physical, to control stuttering in real situations. The instructors are other people who stutter who have completed the course, it does not involve Speech-language pathologists. You can check the main website and other sites such as here for more information. A Google search will also reveal more information and opinions. It is not a mainstream treatment method.
Proponents of the program do not claim it is a a cure – like other treatments, it involves commitment and hardwork on the part of the participant. The therapy is described as "a holistic approach where we look at the psychical side of stuttering and address the freezing, struggle and distortion involved in stuttering and we also look at the psychological side of stuttering where we address the fear and emotions surrounding stuttering." Graduates of the course serve as a support network for others who complete it, and a personal coach is assigned to each individual for 18 months. The founder, Dave McGuire is available by phone or Skype to all members.
The course will take place at the Bond Place Hotel, 65 Dundas Street East, Toronto, Ontario, M5B 2G8. The cost is $2,000 for 4 days, PLUS GST and hotel fees.
