Meaningful Digital Experiences: Embracing 21st Century Trends In Stuttering Therapy

The Meaningful Digital Experiences Research Lab (MDXR LAB) is dedicated to exploring digital technologies as tools for speech and language therapy. By leveraging 21st-century innovations, MDXR LAB aims to create impactful interventions, particularly focusing on social media's potential for people who stutter (PWS). Research has shown that PWS benefit from using social media platforms to share experiences and connect with others, fostering a sense of camaraderie and empowerment. Instagram, with a significant user base, features accounts like @juststutter, where stuttering-related content is shared and discussed. This presentation will delve into how platforms like Instagram can serve as therapeutic tools, highlighting findings from MDXR LAB's current research that focuses on interactions in and around online spaces, and the reasons why some PWS would define the digital experience as meaningful. Additionally, specific examples will be shared that could be used to start and expand important conversations about stuttering and communication.
