Stuttering is a known neurologic condition which has been described since recorded human history. Yet, stuttering is largely ignored by the medical community and persons who stutter lack viable access to comprehensive healthcare. Just recently, the non-profit organization, Stuttering Treatment and Research Society (STARS) was founded to address these concerns.
Outcomes
At the conclusion of the session, the participants shall be able to:
- Cite the known neurologic causes of stuttering.
- Summarize how "one size fits all" does not apply to our diverse stuttering community.
- Describe how advancing neuroscience research and treatment in stuttering will follow other conditions such as Tourette's, ADHD and PTSD resulting in less stigma, greater inclusion, decreased discrimination and wider acceptance within the affected communities.
