Meetup.com is a social website that allows people in a geographical area to connect with others of similar interests. There is a wide variety of groups from around the world that have managed to form and have real, in-person meetups every month or so. Go to http://www.meetup.com/ to start advertising a group in your area. In Toronto one of these groups has been going for over a year now, with great success.
