Improving Lives of Persons Who Stutter through Neuroscience Research, Education and Discovery

Stuttering is a neurologic condition that affects over 1% of population and has existed through human history. In spite of this, our greater healthcare lacks knowledge of our condition. We persons who stutter lack access to comprehensive healthcare. In our interactive discussion, we will empower ourselves with enhanced knowledge--freeing stigma and improving health outcomes.  

Outcomes

Participants will be able to: 

  • Cite the basic neurology of stutter 
  • Describe the different causes of stuttering 
  • Identify coexisting conditions (Social Anxiety Disorder, ADHD, etc) that may accompany stuttering 
  • Review limitations in treatments and diagnostic schemas currently 
  • Summarize paths forward in guiding neuroscience research and treatments to improve lives of our stuttering community

About the presenters

Gerald Maguire

Gerald A Maguire MD is a Professor, Physician and Person Who Stutters. He founded STARS--Stuttering Treatment and Research Society just last year--the first non-profit, volunteer-lead society dedicated to advancing neuroscience research and treatment of stuttering, Dr. Maguire has published over 70 scientific papers and delivered hundreds of invited presentations.
