Descriptive Analysis of Parent Perspectives on the Representation of Agency within the Child's Lived Experience of Stuttering

Recent trends in stuttering intervention emphasize person-centered care and client involvement. While goal setting and agency have been studied in adults, there is limited research on how agency manifests in children who stutter. This workshop explores child agency, reviews study findings on caregiver perceptions of agency, and discusses implications for goal-writing practices.

Outcomes

Participants will be able to:
1) Summarize the peer-reviewed literature on child agency and describe theoretical perspectives that inform understanding of agency in childhood.
2) Describe how child agency has been framed within stuttering research and clinical discourse.
3) Identify emerging descriptive themes from study findings regarding parent perspectives on child agency within the context of stuttering.
4) Apply principles of agency-informed practice by formulating goal-writing strategies that reflect and support child agency in clinical intervention for children who stutter.
