Decoding Stuttering Humour: Coping, Critique, and Response

How can people who stutter respond when humour targets their speech? This workshop explores humour about stuttering as something that can be analyzed, evaluated, and answered on one’s own terms. Participants will examine different kinds of jokes, what they do socially, and how understanding them may support coping, confidence, and agency in difficult moments.

Outcomes

Participants will leave with a practical framework for recognizing different kinds of humour about stuttering, evaluating what such humour is doing socially, and distinguishing between humour that connects and humour that stigmatizes. They will also gain a wider range of response options—from reframing and gentle critique to boundary-setting or non-engagement—so they can respond with greater agency, clarity, and confidence in humour-related situations.
