Draw Your Own Speaking Adventure

Remember those choose-your-own-adventure books? Stuttering is like that. The decisions we make affect the outcomes. Switch words? Describe where you live instead of saying the name of your city? Stutter what you want to say and beat yourself over for doing so? Or feel great that you said what you wanted to say? In this workshop, you will have the opportunity to draw a choose-your-own-adventure story of a real speaking situation as a comic strip… and change the ending! Or perhaps create multiple endings.

Daniele will share his joy of drawing comics about stuttering experiences and the benefits of doing so for self-therapy, creative expression and even awareness and community. After a quick lesson on how to create a cartoon character and draw a comic strip, participants will have the opportunity to draw their own comic about a speaking situation that happened to them (and maybe even change the ending!). They will experience viewing speaking situations from this unique perspective and have the option to share with the group if they wish. All levels of drawing ability – especially none – are welcomed! People who don’t stutter also welcomed!

What to expect

Attendees will receive some personal satisfaction from trying out this creative outlet and viewing their stuttering from a different perspective. SLPs will learn a new, fun way to engage clients in the therapy room.
