Changing the Narrative: Telling Authentic Stories of People who Stutter

Samuel Dunsiger

Saturday 4:00PM - 5:00PM EDT

The media is filled with stories about people with disabilities - and people who stutter - who overcome their disability or achieve something despite the fact they have a disability. While this narrative of overcoming disability is considered heartwarming and inspiring, it perpetuates the misconception that disability is something to overcome and ignores the diverse realities of many people who have disabilities. As people who stutter, we have the power to shift the narrative to focus more on the raw experiences of disability and stuttering. We can change the narrative that disability, and stuttering, is not something to overcome, but rather something that many of us simply live with. This workshop will explore the need for us to refocus the narrative and ways in which we can approach doing this.
