Updates on the Biologic Basis of Stuttering and its Treatment Implications

Research AllDr. Maguire will begin with a summary of his challenges as a person who stutters entering the most verbal field of medicine. He will review his motivation behind his mission to assist the stuttering community through education, advocacy, research, and treatment. He will review the latest on the biologic research investigating the causes of and the brain physiology of stuttering. He will also present the latest understandings we have learned on available and future treatments for stuttering. Dr. Maguire will also review the obstacles faced in analyzing the effectivess of measuring the outcomes of stuttering therapy.
What to expect
At the conclusion of the program, the participant shall be able to:
- Cite the latest understandings of the brain differences underlying stuttering
- Summarize the knowledge regarding the pharmaceutical and other biologic treatments of stuttering
- Identify methods to advance the potential for all of us who stutter by maximing our respective potentials
About the presenter
Gerald A. Maguire, MD is a Professor of Psychiatry and a person who stutters. He has published dozens of articles and has delivered hundreds of presentations worldwide on the biologic basis and medical treatment of stuttering.He is very active in the stuttering community advocating for decreasing the stigma and discrimination we face through dissemination of knowledge and understanding.
